A Housatonic Railroad engine derailed in New Milford Wednesday morning. A police officer was stationed at the scene to monitor traffic in the narrow road adjacent to the tracks.
Housatonic Railroad vice president of special projects Colin Pease says the train hit a chunk of ice that built up that was as hard as concrete and the train derailed. Usually trains are able to break through some ice, but this was so thick, the locomotive went up on top of the ice. The derailment did not appear to affect the second engine or any of the cars.
A crane was going to have to pick the train up to get it back on the rail. The train was travelling at a slow speed and there were no reported injuries.
It occurred less than a mile from the nearest crossing.
